RODDY FORSYTH RECALLS ALEX FERGUSON’S MOVE TO MANCHESTER UNITED

FRI 06 NOV 2026 FOOTBALL

Roddy Forsyth has recalled how he confirmed Alex Ferguson’s move from Aberdeen to Manchester United, marking the transfer’s 40th anniversary. Ferguson agreed to join the English club on 6 November 1986 after eight years at Aberdeen. Forsyth said he found Ferguson with Manchester United chairman Martin Edwards at an Aberdeen airport hotel. He recalled asking Ferguson whether he was Manchester United’s new manager and receiving the answer “yes”.

Forsyth travelled from Glasgow after his editor asked him to investigate suggestions that Ferguson was discussing the job with Manchester United. He located Edwards by calling the hotel and asking to speak to a guest from Manchester. A receptionist directed him to the restaurant, where he heard voices and approached the pair. Forsyth said Ferguson poured him champagne, and he toasted the appointment before contacting his newsroom.

The anniversary also recalls Aberdeen supporters’ responses after Ferguson led the club to domestic and European honours. Fans at the Pittodrie Bar expressed anger, disappointment, shock and acceptance when he left. One supporter said at the time: “I think he's making the wrong move, I think he will regret it.” Ferguson subsequently spent 26 years managing Manchester United, winning the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League before stepping down.
