TURKISH AUTHORITIES ARREST SUSPECT AFTER SHOOTINGS KILL EIGHT

FRI 06 NOV 2026 MIDDLE EAST

Eight people died and one suffered serious injuries in shootings across Afyonkarahisar province in western Turkey on Thursday, 5 November, the Afyonkarahisar Governor's office said. The attacks took place in Yukarıtandır, Ayazini and Kıyır, with victims found at several locations in three separate vehicles. The Eskişehir Governor's Office said officers arrested the suspect alive within its province following a joint police and gendarmerie operation. The Afyonkarahisar Governor's office said: "Unfortunately, in the armed attacks that occurred in our province, eight of our citizens have lost their lives, and one citizen has been seriously injured."

The attacks killed three people near Ayazini and three near Kıyır, while two women wounded in Yukarıtandır later died in hospital. A regional education official confirmed that two of those killed worked at İhsaniye Yukarıtandır Secondary School. CCTV footage showed a man wearing a black jacket, white trousers and glasses holding a long weapon beside a red minivan. Afyonkarahisar lies between Turkey's capital, Ankara, and the coastal city of Izmir.

Police closed roads leading to the affected villages as police and gendarmerie units searched for the suspect. Officers found a red vehicle thought to have a connection to the suspect stuck in mud in the rural Taslike area of Eskişehir. The Afyonkarahisar Governorate said "all relevant institutions of our state have been working in coordination since the very first moment and are meticulously carrying out the necessary work". Authorities are also investigating a connected shooting in which a woman suffered gunshot wounds inside a vehicle in Afyonkarahisar's Osman Gazi neighbourhood at approximately 3.30pm on Thursday.
