FOUR VOLUNTEERS COMPLETE 378-DAY MARS SIMULATION AT NASA CENTRE

MON 02 NOV 2026 SPACE

Four volunteers exited a 3D-printed habitat at NASA's Johnson Space Centre in Houston on Saturday, 31 October, according to the agency. Mission commander Ross Elder, medical officer Ellen Ellis, science officer Matthew Montgomery and flight engineer James Spicer lived inside the 1,700-square-foot (158-square-metre) enclosure for 378 days from 19 October 2025. NASA organised the exercise under its Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog (CHAPEA) programme to prepare astronauts for Mars travel, and centre director Vanessa Wyche greeted the team during a streamed exit ceremony. The University of Central Florida noted that one of its alumni participated in the crew.

During the confinement, the crew grew crops in simulated Martian soil, rationed limited supplies and practised suited spacewalks. The team communicated with NASA officials and emailed family members under transmission delays matching interplanetary travel. At the 200-day mark in May, the crew entered a two-week communication blackout replicating the signal loss when Mars passes behind the sun, according to NASA. A NASA technical report states that isolation and delayed communication link to heightened stress, frustration, adverse behavioural symptoms and reduced performance.

The crew will now undergo two weeks of post-mission evaluations and assessments. Speaking after emerging, Ellis called the experiment "a hell of a year — analog astronauts living in captivity of our own free will", and referenced lunar base plans and a space service academy pursued by President Donald Trump's administration. She added: "We have a narrowing window of opportunity to maintain US preeminence in space." Elder said that "the risks are great" for Mars, adding that putting humans there is "not only achievable, but rather inevitable".
