RYAN MOORE WINS RECORD SIXTH BREEDERS' CUP TURF ON BENVENUTO CELLINI
Ryan Moore rode Benvenuto Cellini to victory in the Breeders' Cup Turf at Keeneland in Kentucky on Saturday, winning the $5million (£3.7million) race for a record sixth time. The son of Frankel, trained by Aidan O'Brien, produced a late run under Moore to beat Map Of Stars, trained by Francis-Henri Graffard and ridden by James Doyle, by three-quarters of a length. Diamond Necklace, O'Brien's other runner and the mount Moore chose not to ride, had finished third in the Arc and finished third at Keeneland. The result gave O'Brien a record-extending eighth win in the race and equalled his own record of 28 top-level victories in a calendar year.
Benvenuto Cellini had won the Irish Derby and finished ninth in the Arc before Saturday's victory. O'Brien said the Arc run had been stronger than the finishing position suggested: "He was a little slowly away, but came home strong and only beaten two and a half lengths by the filly. He's a horse that showed a lot of class." The horse's dam, Newspaperofrecord, won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf in 2018. Moore, appointed MBE in June for services to racing and British sport, rode Estimate to victory in the 2013 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot for Queen Elizabeth II.
O'Brien said Benvenuto Cellini could next race in Hong Kong and remain in training. He said of the Keeneland meeting: "It's so special that everyone is here. It's a special day." Co-owner Peter Brant said O'Brien had long viewed the horse as a Breeders' Cup prospect, crediting Newspaperofrecord's breeding record. Separately, Junior Alvarado won the Breeders' Cup Classic aboard Sovereignty for Bill Mott, beating Japan's Forever Young into fifth.
