Ellis fronted Love Affair in the late 1960s, when the band became known for their single Everlasting Love. Ellis later released a new album featuring contributions from other musicians, including blues performer Norman Beaker.

Record producer David Courtney paid tribute, saying: "I am sad to announce the passing of my long time friend Steve Ellis who left us on Saturday. My thoughts are with Val and the family." Norman Beaker, who performed a track on Ellis's new album, described him as "a good friend and a great voice" and "a legend with the mod movement". Boom Radio and Heritage Chart Radio also issued statements marking his death. Fans have added further tributes online, referencing the enduring popularity of Everlasting Love.
