IRISH OLYMPIAN CIARA MAGEEAN DIES AGED 34

SUN 01 NOV 2026

Ciara Mageean, the Irish middle-distance runner and two-time Olympian, has died at the age of 34. A statement posted on her social media on Sunday said that at 6.30am that morning she "lost her battle with cancer surrounded by her loved ones," having been diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer in May 2025. It described her as "a beloved daughter, sister, wife, friend and inspiration to so many." Athletics Ireland said it was "deeply saddened" by her death, adding that her "courage, warmth and spirit will leave a lasting legacy," and extended condolences to her family and friends.

Mageean was from Portaferry in Co Down, Northern Ireland, and played camogie for Portaferry GAC before turning to athletics. She represented Ireland at the 2016 and 2020 Olympics but withdrew from the 2024 Paris Games because of an Achilles injury. Earlier in 2024 she won the first major title of her career, taking 1500m gold at the European Championships in Rome. She had also won 1500m silver for Northern Ireland at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, having reached the same final as an 18-year-old in 2010.

Ireland's Tánaiste, Simon Harris, said on social media that Mageean was "a European champion, two-time Olympian, a proud Irish athlete and an extraordinary person," describing the news as heartbreaking. Mageean married her long-term partner, Thomas Moran, in a small civil ceremony in Belfast in October 2026. Athletics Ireland said her family, friends and loved ones remained in its thoughts "at this incredibly difficult time." No further details on funeral arrangements have been made public.
