DARON PAYNE RULED OUT FOR SEASON WITH FOOT INJURY

SAT 31 OCT 2026 US SPORTS

Washington Commanders defensive tackle Daron Payne will miss the rest of the 2026 season after suffering a foot injury during practice on 30 October, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported. The Commanders had listed Payne as questionable for their Week 8 match against the Philadelphia Eagles before the diagnosis was confirmed. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that the injury was significant enough to keep Payne out for the foreseeable future, with a stint on injured reserve considered likely. The Associated Press reported that initial X-rays showed a significant injury, with further evaluations planned.

Payne took part on a limited basis in Friday's practice before being added to the injury report with a foot issue, though the Commanders did not disclose the play that caused it. Head coach Dan Quinn said Payne's absence would be felt, citing his "strength inside, his power, and oftentimes that's where he wins on whether it's pass rush or tackles for a loss." Quinn added that "some of the dirty work doesn't go in a stat, but you can definitely feel it." Across his NFL career, Payne has recorded 38 sacks, 446 combined tackles and 242 solo tackles.

The Commanders had been discussing a potential trade for Payne with other teams, a deal the injury has now ended. Payne, a first-round pick in 2018, is in the final year of his contract, meaning Washington cannot recoup value for the deal or avoid paying the remaining $16.4 million of his 2026 salary. He started every game for the Commanders from 2020 through 2024 and missed only a couple of games during the 2025 season. Washington will face the Eagles without several other key players as well as Payne.
