LIVERPOOL BEAT BRIGHTON TO CLAIM FIRST HOME LEAGUE WIN
Liverpool beat Brighton & Hove Albion 2-0 at Anfield to claim their first home Premier League win of the season. A deflection off Pascal Gross turned Florian Wirtz’s 17th-minute effort into an own goal. Alexander Isak scored four minutes later from a Bradley Barcola cross, taking his tally to six goals in seven league appearances. The result moved Liverpool into the Premier League’s top four.
Brighton created the first chance when Diego Gomez released Gross, but Yasin Ayari sent his attempt over the bar. Ronald Araujo, on loan from Barcelona, crossed for Liverpool’s opener while playing at right-back. Shortly after Isak’s goal, Araujo headed the ball away while on the ground to deny Maxim De Cuyper a scoring opportunity. Cody Gakpo and Barcola also contributed from the flanks during a first half in which Brighton initially made the stronger start.
The goals ended a run of more than nine hours without Brighton conceding in all competitions. Liverpool recorded their fourth consecutive win across all competitions and their third victory in four league matches. Brighton began to create problems later in the match, and Gakpo was the only member of Liverpool’s starting front four still on the pitch by the 77th minute. Liverpool face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.
