UEFA RULES OUT FURTHER PUNISHMENT FOR MATHEUS CUNHA AFTER RED CARD

THU 05 NOV 2026 FOOTBALL

Manchester United beat Roma 3-2 in a Champions League match at Old Trafford, with Matheus Cunha scoring the winning goal. Cunha celebrated by removing his shirt and jumping into the crowd, which earned him a yellow card. In stoppage time, he was shown a second yellow card for a late tackle and sent off, leaving United with ten men. Cunha did not leave the pitch immediately and remained on the sidelines until the final whistle. When the match ended, he walked back onto the pitch before Manchester United manager Michael Carrick ushered him away.

UEFA said it would not extend Cunha's ban over the pitch return, stating: "The UEFA official reports did not mention anything about this incident." The governing body added that "the automatic one-match ban following two yellow cards should not be extended for this reason" and confirmed it was "not investigating further this matter." Cunha will therefore serve a single-match ban for the red card. Carrick said he had moved Cunha into a more central position at half-time, swapping him with Bryan Mbeumo to change United's shape.

Carrick said he was "disappointed" with how the match finished but praised Cunha's overall contribution. "Matheus can do them things, he's got them moments," Carrick said. "Disappointed with how it finished, but again just shows how much he cares and willing to do, and when he's in that frame of mind, he's in that mood and he plays like that, that's what we want from him," he added. UEFA's decision means no further action will follow beyond the standard one-match ban, with the governing body confirming the case is closed.
