LIVERPOOL LOSE 3-2 TO FENERBAHCE AFTER LEADING TWICE
Liverpool suffered a 3-2 defeat to Fenerbahce in the Champions League at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium in Istanbul, having led the match twice. Trey Nyoni scored his first goal for Liverpool's senior team in the 25th minute with a deflected strike. Fenerbahce equalised four minutes later through Mason Greenwood, whose free-kick deflected off Jeremy Jacquet and beat goalkeeper Alisson Becker. The sides were level at half-time before substitute Alexander Isak headed Liverpool back in front in the 69th minute, finishing a cross from fellow substitute Cody Gakpo. Archie Brown equalised for Fenerbahce in the 73rd minute, and Vedat Muriqi headed the winning goal six minutes later, rising above the Liverpool defence.
All three of Fenerbahce's goals came from set-piece situations, including Greenwood's deflected free-kick and Muriqi's header. Liverpool had introduced both Isak and Gakpo, along with Florian Wirtz, from the bench during the second half in search of greater control. Muriqi's winning header was met with celebrations from Fenerbahce's supporters inside the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium. Liverpool pressed for a late equaliser in the closing stages but could not find a way through. The defeat was Liverpool's first in this season's Champions League, following what had previously been a winning start to the campaign.
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola found the result frustrating. His side had created enough going forward, in his assessment, to win the match outright. Iraola's team was undone by its defending, with the failure to protect two separate leads proving costly in the end. Nyoni's performance drew attention as a composed display from the midfielder on a major European night in Istanbul.
