MIAMI RECEIVER MALACHI TONEY INJURES ANKLE BEFORE NOTRE DAME GAME

THU 05 NOV 2026 FOOTBALL

Miami wide receiver Malachi Toney injured his ankle during practice on Wednesday, putting his availability for Saturday's game against Notre Dame in doubt. Miami said in a statement that Toney "sustained an injury during Wednesday's practice and is currently undergoing further evaluation by the team's medical staff," adding that updates would follow "as appropriate." ESPN's Pete Thamel and Max Olson reported that Toney is expected to push to play given the magnitude of the game. Top-ranked Miami, unbeaten at 8-0, travels to Notre Dame Stadium to face the No. 11 Fighting Irish, who hold a 7-1 record. Head coach Mario Cristobal may now have to prepare for the possibility of playing without his leading receiver.

Toney has caught 73 passes for 1,027 yards and 13 touchdowns through eight games this season. Accounts of the injury's severity differ: Thamel reported that Toney has a high ankle sprain and will need surgery intended to allow him to return for the College Football Playoff. Olson, however, said the injury is not expected to be a long-term setback. High ankle sprains typically keep players out for at least four weeks. Miami has not disclosed further details on the injury beyond its initial statement.

The outcome matters for both teams' College Football Playoff hopes. Notre Dame has not beaten a ranked opponent this season, and its final three opponents currently sit outside the Top 25. A loss to Miami could put the Fighting Irish's own playoff prospects in danger. Toney's production has been central to Miami's unbeaten start, making his status significant heading into kick-off. Miami said it would continue sharing updates on Toney's condition as the medical evaluation continues.
