PAT MURPHY CALLS BRIAN CASHMAN OVER YANKEES COMMENTS

WED 04 NOV 2026 US SPORTS

Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy has said he telephoned New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman after remarks he made during Milwaukee's World Series celebrations were caught on camera and circulated online. Murphy made the comments to Brewers player Jake Bauers on the field in Tampa Bay after the Brewers won their first World Series title in Game 5. "I called Brian Cashman right away when I heard it got out," Murphy said. "I picked up a phone and called Brian right away, and had a good conversation." Murphy said he had tried to explain that he was not talking about "the 2026 Yankees."

During the celebrations, Murphy told Bauers: "Just remember when you were on that horseshit Yankees team, and you guys were all playing for yourselves." He added: "This is the way we used to do it," describing it as the Brewers' team-first approach. Bauers, who is set to become a free agent, played for the Yankees in 2023. Murphy said the remark was part of a running joke between the two over Bauers' pending free agency. He said he had meant to refer generally to teams with "a lot of high-paid, long-contract players," adding: "I regret saying it... I got caught."

Brewers closer Trevor Megill discussed the comments during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, saying Murphy "feels terrible" that the remarks had become public. "I'm sure he will apologise to (Brian) Cashman and all the people over there," Megill said. Murphy said he had meant to describe the Yankees as "this iconic machine," adding: "It wasn't smart on my part, and I'm sorry about it." Murphy described Cashman as "a good guy" after their conversation.
