MOTHER AND DAUGHTER KILLED IN GRIZZLY BEAR ATTACK IN CANADA

Jennifer Balcarras and her daughter, Selah Reed, have been found dead following an apparent grizzly bear attack on the Snooka West Trail near Bella Coola, in western Canada. Balcarras's body was found on the trail on Monday, and Reed's body was located during a search the following afternoon. The pair had been reported missing by their family on the Sunday after failing to return from a walk the previous day. Balcarras's brother, Josh, told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation the trail was "not in a remote area" and that the walk had been "just a casual walk".

Balcarras had recently moved to Bella Coola to work as an art therapist, which her family said began "a new chapter in her life". She played the guitar and was remembered by her family as a book lover who enjoyed painting and the outdoors. Balcarras was a mother of four and a grandmother, and Reed was her youngest child, the family said. Josh Balcarras said the family's alarm grew as the women failed to make contact: "The way it starts is a few hours of not hearing from them. That turns into a day, and then a night … then a second night comes and it becomes a real thing."

Balcarras's brother, Matthew Balcarras, said Reed "was very much a central person in our family". A fundraiser has been launched to cover funeral costs for both women, describing their deaths as an "unimaginable tragedy". "Jenny and Selah were tragically found deceased on a trail near Bella Coola, BC, after being attacked by a bear," the fundraising page states. "This sudden and heartbreaking loss has left their family and loved ones devastated," it adds.
