GAZA DOCTOR ADAM HAMAWY WINS NEW JERSEY CONGRESSIONAL SEAT
Adam Hamawy has won election to the US House of Representatives, taking New Jersey's 12th Congressional District in the US congressional midterm elections. The Associated Press reported that the Democrat defeated Republican candidate Gregg Mele. Hamawy is a doctor of Egyptian origin who previously served as a US Army combat surgeon. He treated Palestinians wounded during Israel's military campaign in Gaza.
Hamawy joined missions to Gaza in 2024 and 2025. Those missions were organised through the Palestinian American Medical Association, in coordination with the World Health Organisation. During his campaign, he said he opposed US military assistance to Israel and to other countries he accused of committing human rights violations. He also condemned US military action against Iran, describing it as "illegal and immoral."
Hamawy's victory makes him the first Muslim to represent New Jersey in Congress. In a May interview, he said Washington was "catering to special interests of the defence contractors and war mongers and with organisations like [American Israel Public Affairs Committee] AIPAC and Israel's special interests." The remark named AIPAC specifically among the interests he said were shaping US policy on Israel. He will now represent the 12th Congressional District in the US House of Representatives.
