WED 04 NOV 2026 CELEBRITY

John Frieda, the British hairstylist behind the Frizz Ease haircare range, has died aged 75. His death was confirmed on 4 November 2026. He died peacefully, surrounded by his family, after an illness that was not disclosed publicly. Frieda built a global salon empire and was the former husband of singer and actress Lulu. He was best known to the public for the haircare products that carried his name.

Frieda was born Alan Howard Frieda in London in 1951 and began working as a boy in his father Isidore's salon. He trained under the House of Leonard before working as a stylist for British Vogue. He opened his first salon in 1976, in his mid-20s. During this period he created the "Purdey" haircut worn by Joanna Lumley in The New Avengers, a style that became part of British popular culture. His business later expanded to salons in London, New York and Los Angeles.

In the late 1980s, Frieda worked with American businesswoman Gail Federici to launch his namesake haircare range, whose Frizz Ease formulations changed everyday home hair care. In 2002, he sold the products division to Japanese cosmetics company Kao Corporation, while retaining ownership of his salons. Over his career, his clients included Princess Diana, Madonna, Nicole Kidman, Scarlett Johansson and Gwyneth Paltrow. Frieda married Lulu in 1977 in a high-profile wedding.
