ARSENAL BEAT LIVERPOOL AT ANFIELD AMID ISAK PENALTY ROW

WED 04 NOV 2026 FOOTBALL

Arsenal beat Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield on Sunday, winning there in the Premier League for the first time since 2012. Kai Havertz scored the only goal in the 16th minute, a result that also made him the competition's all-time leading German goalscorer. The win left Arsenal three points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table. Liverpool pressed for an equaliser for the remainder of the match but could not find a way past the Arsenal defence. The match was overshadowed by a disputed penalty incident involving Arsenal's Jurrien Timber and Liverpool's Alexander Isak.

In the 21st minute, Timber appeared to grab a handful of Isak's shirt as a cross flew past them in the box, but Isak stayed on his feet rather than going down and instead remonstrated with Timber. Referee Andy Madley waved play on, and the decision was not overturned by the Video Assistant Referee. Arsenal registered 49 clearances over the course of the match as they defended for long periods under Liverpool pressure. Centre-backs Gabriel and Ezri Konsa, alongside full-backs Timber and Riccardo Calafiori, were central to Arsenal's defensive effort.

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola said after the game that his side should have been awarded a penalty for the Isak incident. "I think the Isak one is a clear penalty," Iraola said, and added that he would now tell his players to go down more easily when fouled inside the box. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta rejected the criticism, saying Arsenal hold a "massive library" of video clips showing opposition players pulling shirts in the penalty area. Arsenal next turn their attention to the Champions League, where they travel to face Slavia Prague.
