GLENN MAXWELL ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT FROM INTERNATIONAL CRICKET

TUE 03 NOV 2026

Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from international cricket, ending a 14-year career with Australia. He revealed the decision on The Final Word podcast, with accounts differing on whether the announcement came on Monday or Tuesday. "I'm going to be announcing my retirement from international cricket and domestic games for Victoria in the 50 over and the four-day stuff, red ball completely," he said. His last appearance for Australia came against Oman at the T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka in February.

Maxwell played 149 one-day internationals, 130 T20 internationals and seven Tests for Australia, scoring 3,990 ODI runs and 2,897 in T20 internationals, with ten international centuries in total. Nicknamed "The Big Show" for his rapid scoring, he is one of only two players, alongside India's Rohit Sharma, to hit five international centuries in T20 cricket. His wicket tally in the shorter formats is recorded as 128 by one count and 136 by another. He helped Australia win the 2015 and 2023 ODI World Cups and the 2021 T20 World Cup, and scored an unbeaten double century against Afghanistan during the 2023 tournament.

Maxwell retired from one-day international cricket last year. He had hoped for a farewell appearance at the Melbourne Cricket Ground against England this month, but those hopes ended when the squad was announced on Monday without him. "There was, I suppose, a small hope or discussion that I might have been able to potentially get a send-off game at the MCG, but I can completely understand the direction they're going with this squad," he said. He said he wanted to spend more time on his fitness for the remaining tournaments of his career.
