CRAIG SILVEY JAILED OVER CHILD EXPLOITATION MATERIAL CHARGES
Craig Silvey has been jailed for seven months by the Western Australia District Court after pleading guilty to two charges of possessing and distributing child exploitation material. The court heard that Silvey, a Fremantle-based children's author, engaged with anonymous accounts online in which he said he "loved" incestuous child exploitation material and described his "perfect age" as eight. He was sentenced on Monday. The next day, he published a roughly 9,000-word statement on Substack titled "My Apology," writing: "I am appalled and mortified by my conduct, and I am deeply, profoundly sorry."
In the statement, Silvey wrote that reactions to his case had included "confusion, sadness, shock, dismay, disgust, concern and disappointment," adding that he shared that response. He said he feared "aspects of my vocation" had led some to suspect "some kind of calculated and insidious conspiracy," which he called "completely untrue," and said he was aware others might assume the offending reflected "a horrible and inappropriate attraction," adding: "I assure you this is not the case at all." He said he had spent the past year in "intensive therapy and deep reflection." He attributed his offending to a history of trauma, shame and anxiety, including alleged childhood neglect, violence and sexual abuse.
Silvey wrote that this history culminated in a "destructive, despairing breakdown" at the end of 2025, during which the offending occurred. Recalling the moment, he wrote: "I sent that image. I pulled the trigger. I made everything stop." He had pleaded guilty to the two charges earlier this year, ahead of Monday's sentencing. He said he did not expect the statement to change how his conduct was viewed.
