ONE DEAD, EIGHT HURT IN SHOOTING AT ALABAMA'S MAGIC CITY CLASSIC
One person died and eight others were wounded in a shooting outside Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama, after Saturday night's Magic City Classic football game. Birmingham Police said gunfire broke out around 7.50pm near the 400 block of Graymont Avenue, behind the stadium's south endzone stands. One victim was left in critical condition, while the rest suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Police Chief Michael Pickett described the shooting as "two senseless acts of violence." Officers detained one person for questioning but have not released any identities.
Police said multiple firearms were recovered at the scene, and a motive had not been established. Pickett said the shooting happened mostly off stadium property. All Magic City Classic tailgating was suspended, and police ordered everyone to leave the area around Legion Field. Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin said it was not clear what had led to the shooting. "There is no argument, no beef, no misunderstanding that can justify this level of senseless violence during a night of celebration," he said in a statement.
The 85th annual Magic City Classic is billed as the largest Historically Black College and University football game in the United States. Alabama A&M beat Alabama State 31-28, ending a four-game losing streak. Woodfin said the Classic was "rooted in HBCU tradition," adding, "tonight, as a family, we grieve." He said the city would "wrap our arms around neighbours who are dealing with unimaginable pain" and pledged that "justice will be served to those who brought harm."
