MEG MATHEWS REVEALS BREAST CANCER DIAGNOSIS AND DOUBLE MASTECTOMY

SUN 01 NOV 2026 DISEASE

Meg Mathews has revealed she was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2024 and underwent a double mastectomy in March 2025. Mathews, married to Noel Gallagher from 1997 to 2001, said the diagnosis followed a routine mammogram. She said the NHS called about a week later, asking her to attend a 3D scan. The scan found three pea-sized lumps beneath her left breast, more in her lymph nodes, and a bigger lump she could feel. She was diagnosed with HER2-negative breast cancer, which she described as not aggressive. "I didn't feel scared when I got the diagnosis," she said.

Mathews was offered chemotherapy but chose a double mastectomy and removal of her lymph nodes instead, calling it "my choice". She said the cancer had reached three or four lymph nodes, telling doctors: "Take all of them out!" The operation took two-and-a-half hours, without reconstructive surgery. Eleven days later, she said a pathology report confirmed she was cancer-free. She has spoken previously about her struggles with alcohol and has been sober since 2017.

Mathews said she decided to share her story after Breast Cancer Awareness Month, to help other women. She said it took her a year to come to terms with the diagnosis. Last summer, four months after deciding on the mastectomy, she watched Oasis perform at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff with her daughter, Anaïs Gallagher, the band's first show together in 15 years. She recalled her daughter telling her: "Mum, I know you can do this. If anyone can, it's you." Mathews, who shares Anaïs with Gallagher, recalled saying of her daughter: "She's very black and white—she's got more of her dad in her."
