POLICE FIND SUSPICIOUS DEVICES IN NORTH BELFAST
The Police Service of Northern Ireland said officers found a number of suspicious devices during a security operation in the Edwina Street area of north Belfast on Friday. Detectives from the PSNI’s terrorism investigation unit searched two properties that morning as part of an inquiry into suspected terrorism offences. Police said they evacuated local residents after finding the devices. Officers also arrested a man under the Terrorism Act earlier that day. The PSNI said he remained in police custody on Friday evening.
Ammunition Technical Officers joined police at a house on Edwina Street as the operation continued into the evening, according to the PSNI. The searches took place in the Shankill area, and police cordoned off Shankill Road. Police also advised motorists to avoid the area while the public safety operation continued. The PSNI said cordons remained in place near the house while officers carried out their work.
A PSNI spokesperson said: “Cordons are in place, and we would ask that the public avoid the area until further notice.” The spokesperson said police and Ammunition Technical Officers remained at the Edwina Street house on Friday evening. Police did not specify how many devices officers had found or how many properties they had evacuated. The PSNI said it would provide a further update in due course.
