SKY SPORTS APOLOGISES AFTER CONOR HAUGHEY SWEARS ON AIR
Fleetwood beat Arsenal on penalties at Highbury Stadium on Tuesday night to advance from the League Cup last 16. Conor Haughey scored the deciding penalty after Jay Lynch saved Bruno Guimaraes’s attempt, the only miss in the shootout. Haughey had come off the bench against the reigning Premier League champions. Asked by Sky Sports about his penalty tactic, he said: “I don’t know – just pick my spot and put it in. Top corner and then just run to f***.” Sky Sports apologised four times after the comment.
Haughey sent his penalty past Illan Meslier. Fleetwood, a League Two side from Lancashire, had kept Arsenal from scoring a winner before the shootout. Lynch said his voice had gone from organising Fleetwood’s defence during the match. He credited the whole team for its performance. Lynch said Fleetwood had drawn encouragement from Grimsby Town’s win over Manchester United last year.
Lynch said Fleetwood had expected a storm and difficult conditions at Highbury Stadium. He said the team thought the weather might work in its favour. Speaking alongside Haughey after the match, Lynch described the result as “Amazing for the club, the town.” Haughey said beating Arsenal showed “how good this team are”. The win puts Fleetwood in the League Cup quarter-finals.
