POLICE CONFIRM WOMAN'S DEATH OFF ISLE OF WIGHT

WED 28 OCT 2026

A woman died after being swept into the sea while walking her dog on a coastal path on the Isle of Wight on Monday, according to police. Emergency services responded at about 11.15am near the promenade between Sandown and Shanklin during a storm. Rescuers recovered her body shortly after midday from waters south of Sandown Pier. Police said emergency workers could not save her and pronounced her dead at the scene.

Police officers, paramedics and coastguard teams took part in the response, which also involved a helicopter. A cordon covered part of the seafront while crews dealt with the incident. Police said: “Her next of kin have been updated and a file will now be prepared for the coroner.” The force gave no update on whether the woman's dog entered the sea or survived.

Storm Boelo also brought high winds to other parts of the UK on Tuesday. The Met Office issued a yellow warning for Scotland and the far north-east of Northern Ireland until 9pm. It forecast gusts of 50 to 60 mph across many areas, with gusts of at least 70 mph possible in exposed parts of north-west and far northern Scotland. Schools closed across the Western Isles, the Highlands and Aberdeenshire because of the weather. In North Ayrshire, HM Coastguard suspended a search near Largs at about 9am after crews found nobody following a report that large waves had swept a person into the sea.
