49ERS BACK EDDY PIÑEIRO AFTER MISSED KICKS

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch said the team will keep Eddy Piñeiro as its kicker during its bye week. “We don’t have a kicker tryout,” Lynch said on KNBR on Tuesday. Piñeiro missed an extra point in Sunday’s 29-20 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. He has missed four extra points and three field goals this season. San Francisco entered its bye week with a 6-1 record after its first loss of the season.

San Francisco had cut Atlanta’s lead to 26-20 in the fourth quarter when Piñeiro missed the extra point. Atlanta then kicked a field goal to extend its lead to nine points. The 49ers did not score again. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game that the team had not discussed trying out other kickers. San Francisco returns to action in Week 9.

Piñeiro joined San Francisco in Week 2 of 2025 after the team moved on from Jake Moody. He converted 28 of 29 field-goal attempts last season. The 49ers gave him a four-year, $17 million extension this offseason, with $8 million fully guaranteed this year and $4 million guaranteed for 2027. Lynch said the team based the extension on Piñeiro’s work with the 49ers and his record across his career.
