GUILLERMO OCHOA HINTS AT RETIREMENT AS MEXICO GOALKEEPER
Guillermo Ochoa has indicated he intends to retire from football as his time with Mexico's national team concludes. The 40-year-old goalkeeper made the statement during FIFA's 'Letters that Unite' series ahead of the World Cup. Ochoa described the national team as his "compass" in career and life, stating that without it he sees no further meaning in continuing to play. He said he leaves "in peace, with my head held high and proud to have experienced this."
Ochoa had been absent from Mexico's squad since 2024 before being recalled in May 2026 following injuries to first-choice goalkeepers. He had not appeared for Mexico since the CONCACAF Nations League finals in 2024, when the team lost 2-0 to Honduras in a quarter-final first leg match. The goalkeeper, who plays for AEL Limassol, made his return in a pre-tournament friendly against Australia, playing 45 minutes. Mexico named him to their 26-man squad for the current tournament.
Ochoa has featured in six World Cups throughout his career, more than any other Mexican footballer. His last appearance in a World Cup match came in 2022, when he was 36 years old. The goalkeeper has become a significant figure in Mexican football history, having played in four consecutive World Cups from 2014 onwards.
