JORDAN AND UZBEKISTAN MAKE WORLD CUP DEBUTS WITH TACTICAL AMBITION

Jordan and Uzbekistan will play their first World Cup matches this week, bringing tactical organisation and counterattacking approaches to the tournament. Jordan face Austria on Wednesday before meetings with Algeria and Argentina, whilst Uzbekistan begin against Colombia, followed by Portugal and DR Congo. Both nations represent Asia's newest World Cup participants, determined to compete beyond their inaugural appearance. The matches will draw significant attention in their home nations, with cafes across Amman and Tashkent expected to fill with supporters.

Jordan's squad has been affected by injuries ahead of their campaign. Talismanic striker Yazan al-Naimat is unavailable after a cruciate ligament injury sustained in December, whilst forward Ali Olwan has not played competitively since February, though he is expected to be fit for selection. Musa al-Taamari, a winger playing for Rennes in France, represents Jordan's primary attacking threat and features among the nation's few established European-based players. Odeh Fakhoury, aged 20, will likely lead the attack in Naimat's absence after scoring his first international goal on 31 May against Switzerland. Head coach Jamal Sellami, who employs a 3-4-3 formation, has characterised recent preparatory defeats—a 4-1 loss to Switzerland and a 2-0 defeat by Colombia—as part of the learning process.

Sellami's defensive approach prioritises organisation and structure over attacking flair, reflecting a broader tactical philosophy shared by both debutant nations. Former Jordan international goalkeeper Amer Shafi, who earned 179 caps, has expressed confidence in the team's preparation despite the recent setbacks. Both Jordan and Uzbekistan view their World Cup participation as an opportunity to establish themselves amongst football's elite, with home nation support expected to sustain their ambitions throughout the tournament.
