MARCELO BIELSA DECLINES TO EXPLAIN FIFA WORLD CUP PORTRAIT
Marcelo Bielsa, Uruguay's coach, has declined to explain his official FIFA World Cup portrait, in which he gazes downwards rather than at the camera. The 70-year-old said he owed no explanation for how the photograph was taken. When questioned by journalists following Uruguay's 1-1 opening match draw with Saudi Arabia in Miami on Monday, Bielsa rejected suggestions the pose represented a protest. He stated: "I'm not a model."
Bielsa, known by the nickname 'El Loco' (The Crazy One), has built a reputation for unconventional behaviour throughout his career. The former Leeds United manager is recognised for his obsessive attention to detail and distinctive courtside conduct. When pressed further on the portrait, he questioned why any explanation was necessary, asking rhetorically why wearing glasses or looking in a particular direction required justification. FIFA has photographed all teams and staff at this World Cup as part of standard tournament coverage procedures.
Bielsa is managing his third nation at a World Cup, having previously led Argentina and Chile at the tournament. Uruguay's next match is scheduled against Cape Verde on Sunday at 23:00 BST. The fixture represents the team's second group-stage game.
