US GOVERNMENT FORCES ANTHROPIC TO DISABLE AI MODELS OVER SECURITY CONCERNS

TUE 16 JUN 2026 AI

The Trump administration ordered Anthropic to suspend access to its Mythos 5 and Fable 5 artificial intelligence models for all foreign nationals last week, citing national security concerns. Anthropic subsequently disabled both models for all customers to ensure compliance with the directive. The company stated that the government had identified a method of bypassing, or "jailbreaking", Fable 5, though Anthropic disputed the severity of the vulnerability.

The ban followed intervention by Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, who spoke with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and other US officials about the jailbreak issue. Amazon researchers had flagged the potential vulnerability, with Jassy warning that it could enable catastrophic cyber attacks. David Sacks, a tech entrepreneur serving as an advisor to the Trump administration, stated on Saturday that the jailbreak warning had originated from a "highly credible trusted partner" of both Anthropic and the US government. According to Sacks, the administration asked Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to fix the jailbreak or remove the model, a request Amodei refused.

Anthropic is meeting with White House officials this week in an attempt to overturn the ban. The company disagreed with the government's assessment, arguing that the discovery of a narrow potential jailbreak did not justify recalling a commercial model deployed to hundreds of millions of people. The situation underscores the extent to which US government interference now extends into the artificial intelligence industry.
