RUSSIAN TANKER CAPTAIN CHARGED AFTER ROYAL MARINES INTERCEPTION
Ajay Pant, an Indian national, has been charged with contravening sanctions following his detention aboard a Russian shadow fleet oil tanker intercepted by Royal Marine Commandos in the English Channel on Sunday. The National Crime Agency confirmed that Pant is due to appear at Southampton Magistrates' Court on Tuesday. Twenty-four crew members remain aboard the vessel, which is being held off the coast of Weymouth.
The tanker was intercepted during operations against Russia's shadow fleet, which operates outside conventional maritime oversight to circumvent international sanctions. The vessel's seizure represents continued enforcement action against sanctions evasion in UK waters. The interception was carried out by Royal Marine Commandos, indicating a coordinated enforcement operation.
The case will proceed through the magistrates' court system, with Pant's appearance scheduled for Tuesday. The vessel remains under seizure pending the outcome of the legal proceedings. The detention and subsequent charge represent ongoing efforts by UK authorities to enforce sanctions compliance in maritime operations.
