ANUNOBY'S GAME-WINNER SENDS KNICKS TO NBA CHAMPIONSHIP

MON 15 JUN 2026 US SPORTS

OG Anunoby scored the decisive basket with 1.2 seconds remaining in game four of the 2026 NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden, putting the New York Knicks within one victory of the championship. The San Antonio Spurs led 106-105 when Jalen Brunson's three-point attempt failed to find the basket. Anunoby leapt above defending players to tip the ball back into the rim, giving the Knicks a 107-106 lead. The crowd at the sold-out arena erupted as the play sent the series to a fifth game.

Three nights later, the Knicks defeated the Spurs 4-1 in San Antonio to secure their first NBA Finals victory since 1973. Anunoby described the moment as historic for British basketball, noting the significance of his game-winner joining legendary shots by Magic Johnson in 1986, Michael Jordan in 1996, and Steve Nash in 1997. The London-born player appeared in 84 of the Knicks' 101 matches during the regular season, starting every game. This marks his second NBA title, though his first active contribution to a championship, having been sidelined by injury during Toronto Raptors' 2019 Finals victory.

The Knicks' championship featured four UK-based players on their roster. Alongside Anunoby, teammates Jeremy Sochan, Amari Williams, and Tosan Evbuomwan represented a record number of United Kingdom players across an NBA season. Brunson won the Finals MVP award and has been selected as an all-star in each of the past three seasons.
