ONE IN SIX BRITONS VIEW MUSLIM POPULATION GROWTH AS THREAT TO UK CULTURE

MON 15 JUN 2026

One in six Britons believe the growth of the Muslim population "poses a foundational threat to UK culture", according to a study by the social integration thinktank British Future and the British Muslims. The research identifies a significant minority holding this view amongst the British public. The study also warns that hostile attitudes towards Muslims risk becoming normalised within society.

The majority of Britons surveyed stated that Muslims are as British as white non-Muslims, indicating broader acceptance across the population. This suggests a divergence between mainstream opinion and the views of the minority holding negative perceptions. The thinktank's findings highlight a tension between general integration sentiment and specific concerns expressed by a substantial proportion of respondents.

The research underscores the importance of monitoring public attitudes towards religious minorities. The findings indicate that whilst most Britons recognise Muslim integration into British society, a meaningful segment maintains reservations about demographic change. British Future's analysis suggests that addressing misconceptions about Muslim communities remains a priority for social cohesion efforts.
