BANKER ARRESTED OVER 2017 PUTNEY BRIDGE BUS ATTACK
Metropolitan Police arrested a 44-year-old man on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm relating to an incident on Putney Bridge in May 2017. A woman was pushed into the path of a bus on the bridge, but the vehicle's driver managed to swerve and avoid collision. The suspect remained unidentified for nine years following the attack. Police have taken the man into custody as part of the investigation.
The incident occurred when a jogger pushed a 33-year-old woman towards an oncoming double-decker bus. Bus driver Oliver Salbris swerved to avoid hitting her, preventing serious injury or death. CCTV footage of the attack circulated widely and prompted a lengthy manhunt. Despite two previous arrests and questioning of 50 suspects, police had closed the case without charging anyone. The suspect reportedly works as a director at a private bank and has connections to several European royal families.
The case gained renewed public attention following a theatrical production about the incident called Once Upon a Bridge, performed at the OSO Arts Centre in Barnes, south west London. This renewed focus on the case appears to have contributed to the recent arrest. The investigation, which had remained open, has now yielded a suspect in custody pending further questioning.
