HARTLEPOOL BABY BANK SEES TENFOLD RISE IN FAMILIES SEEKING AID

MON 15 JUN 2026

Hartlepool Baby Bank has experienced unprecedented demand, with approximately 150 families attending each week, representing a tenfold increase since the organisation opened in 2019. The community charity provides free clothes, toys and equipment for children to families in need. Chair Emilie de Bruijn stated that demand had "never been higher" and attributed the surge to parents struggling with childcare costs and employment challenges. The Department for Education has been approached for comment regarding subsidies for childcare.

De Bruijn, who founded the organisation alongside two friends, reported that the bank has assisted 139 new families this year alongside over 2,000 repeat referrals. According to government figures, 27% of children in Hartlepool live in absolute poverty, defined as household income below 60% of the national average. Families now request broader ranges of items than previously, with requests expanding from individual shoes to complete clothing and coat requirements. The organisation offers services ranging from advice to emergency provision of essential items for newborns in cases of unexpected or early birth.

The baby bank welcomes donations of all kinds, though cots, toiletries, nappies and maternity pads are particularly needed, including opened packets. De Bruijn noted that many service users are employed but remain trapped in cycles of poverty due to childcare expenses preventing access to suitable work. She characterised the support model as "one family to another, it's a community supporting itself," highlighting mutual aid within Hartlepool.
