RUSSIAN STRIKES HIT KYIV CATHEDRAL AND RESIDENTIAL AREAS

MON 15 JUN 2026 EUROPE

Russia launched a sustained missile and drone attack on Ukraine in the early hours of Monday morning, with waves of explosions reported across the capital, Kyiv. The Dormition Cathedral of Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, one of Ukraine's most significant religious sites, caught fire during the assault. Residential buildings across the capital were also struck during the attack. Air raids killed at least five people across the country.

The attack occurred hours after the United States president told Russia's leader that ending the war was vital. Kyiv Pechersk Lavra stands as one of Ukraine's most historically and culturally important religious institutions. The monastery complex sustained damage alongside civilian infrastructure throughout the capital. The Russian bombardment comprised multiple waves of strikes across Ukrainian territory.

The assault represents a continuation of Russia's targeting of Ukrainian civilian areas and cultural heritage sites. Ukraine's air defence systems responded to the incoming missiles and drones during the early morning hours. No confirmed statement regarding Ukrainian casualties or damage assessments has been officially released at present.
