TRUMP TO MEET G7 LEADERS BEFORE US-IRAN MEMORANDUM SIGNING

MON 15 JUN 2026 NORTH AMERICA

Donald Trump will meet with G7 leaders in Evian on Monday to discuss a memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran scheduled for signing on Friday in Geneva. French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed the meeting will address Lebanon, the Strait of Hormuz, and Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile programmes. The gathering follows an agreement reached between Washington and Tehran on military operations in the Middle East.

The United Kingdom, France, Germany and Italy issued a joint statement on Sunday expressing readiness to lift sanctions imposed on Iran in response to verifiable steps on its nuclear programme. The statement committed these nations to work intensively with the United States, Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency to achieve a long-term diplomatic settlement. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the memorandum will be signed on 19 June, with both sides declaring "immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon." According to reports, the United States agreed to release $12 billion in frozen assets to Iran before negotiations commence.

The Israeli military conducted strikes in southern Beirut during negotiations. Israeli officials claimed a senior Hezbollah figure was killed in the operations. Thousands of activists rallied in Geneva to protest policies of G7 countries ahead of the summit. These developments mark a shift in regional diplomacy following months of military conflict.
