CYCLIST UNDERGOES SKULL SURGERY AFTER SHED COLLISION

SUN 14 JUN 2026

Colin Appleton, a cyclist aged 66, required a quarter of his skull to be removed following a collision with a fly-tipped shed on a country road. The incident resulted in severe injuries that necessitated emergency surgical intervention. Appleton regained consciousness in hospital with no memory of his family members.

The collision occurred when Appleton encountered the illegally dumped shed whilst cycling. The impact caused injuries significant enough to warrant the removal of a substantial portion of his skull during emergency treatment. The fly-tipped nature of the shed—discarded unlawfully on the roadside—meant the hazard was unexpected and unavoidable for road users.

The incident highlights the dangers posed by fly-tipped waste on public roads and the serious injuries that can result from collisions with such obstructions. Appleton's case demonstrates the medical consequences of encountering illegally dumped materials in areas frequented by cyclists and other road users.
