GUNMAN KILLS CITIBANK EMPLOYEE AFTER DISPUTE OVER DEBT
Jacob Pearson fatally shot Citibank employee Leanne Selman at the bank’s Tampa campus after becoming angry over a court summons concerning about $2,500 in debt, authorities said. Hillsborough Sheriff Chad Chronister said Pearson drove roughly 90 miles from Orlando before opening fire. Authorities said Pearson crashed his car through a gate into the courtyard and attacked Selman, who worked in human resources. A Citibank security officer who also served as vice president of operations shot Pearson five times, and Pearson died at a hospital.
Authorities said Pearson had threatened an attorney’s office before travelling to the campus. He told the office: “Unless you want me to go over there with my AR-15, my bulletproof vest, and my insanity, you MF-ing cancel this court case.” The office alerted bank security and Orlando police, who found that Pearson had already left. Authorities said his rifle fired 15 times before jamming, after which he shot Selman again with a handgun as she crawled away.
Authorities said Pearson then entered a cafeteria, appearing calm and carrying 90 rounds of ammunition. Five other people suffered injuries, according to authorities, but the account did not specify how they sustained them. More than 360 deputies responded, Chronister said, crediting the security officer with preventing further killing. “Our suspect took one life, and that's one life too many,” he said. Authorities said Pearson had no criminal record and was married with one child.
