ROMANIAN PRESIDENT NOMINATES VESTEA AS PRIME MINISTER
Romanian President Nicusor Dan nominated Adrian Vestea as prime minister on Sunday following the resignation of Eugen Tomac. Vestea, a member of the National Liberal Party, previously served as a mayor and development minister. Dan announced the appointment on social media, stating that a political solution was necessary under the circumstances. Vestea declared his intention to prioritise development, describing Romania as Europe's sixth-largest country and pledging to emphasise growth from his first day in office.
Vestea outlined plans to establish a political government committed to undertaking substantial reforms whilst maintaining Romania's pro-Western alignment. He emphasised the need for development focus in his remarks following the nomination. Romania currently faces significant economic challenges, including the highest inflation rate across the European Union and an operating fiscal deficit. The country has simultaneously increased defence spending in recent years.
The government coalition previously collapsed following a vote of no-confidence against then-Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan last month. The Social Democratic Party withdrew from the government coalition in April, supporting the motion for the no-confidence vote. Dan stated that both he and Tomac had engaged in consultations with political parties before pursuing the change in direction. Vestea's appointment represents the formation of a new government structure following the political instability.
