ERLING HAALAND SCORES WINNER AS MANCHESTER CITY BEAT LEIPZIG

THU 05 NOV 2026 INTERNATIONAL

Erling Haaland scored the winning goal as Manchester City beat RB Leipzig 3-2 in the Champions League, on match day four of the competition's group phase. Haaland converted from Elliot Anderson's cross to settle the contest after City had been pegged back twice. Ridle Baku scored Leipzig's first equaliser, with City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma's error contributing to the goal. Antonio Nusa scored Leipzig's second equaliser, with manager Enzo Maresca saying afterwards that "both goals are quite silly goals we can avoid." Rayan Cherki struck a post for City late in the match. The result ended a run in which City had lost two of their previous three games.

Maresca made four changes to his starting line-up from the defeat to Brighton, dropping captain Rúben Dias in favour of Abdukodir Khusanov at centre-back and handing the armband to Haaland. Donnarumma's mistake for Baku's goal followed a similar error in City's recent defeat at Aston Villa, where Nicolas Jackson scored the winner, as well as two further errors in last month's defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. "It's not a concern but it's a mistake," Maresca said. "Gigio knows he was not good with the first goal."

Maresca said he would review City's goalkeeping situation during the international break rather than before the team's next fixture. "At the moment I'm not thinking about the goalkeeping situation," he said. Maresca also said he needed to address a leaky defence and get his midfield to exert greater control over matches. City face Nottingham Forest in the Premier League on Saturday, before the Champions League season resumes after the international break.
