NOTHING CEO CARL PEI ANNOUNCES FIRST AI-NATIVE PRODUCT FOR DECEMBER
Nothing, the smartphone company known for its transparent-backed Nothing Phone handsets, has confirmed it is developing its first "AI-native" product, due to ship in December. Chief executive Carl Pei announced the move on X. He wrote that the device "has no new screen, and it couldn't have been an app," describing it as "a tool, but one built with the personality and care that have come to define a Nothing product." Pei disclosed no further details. The announcement places Nothing among a growing number of companies building hardware around artificial intelligence.
Pei used the post to set out his view of the industry's search for artificial intelligence's "iPhone moment" — a breakthrough device bringing AI into daily use as the iPhone did for mobile computing. His remarks followed launches and rumoured devices from companies including Apple and OpenAI, among them pendants, pins, glasses and "companion" devices. "I admire the boldness, but I read this moment differently," he wrote. Pei argued that the original iPhone only arrived after three decades of work on mobile devices, tracing that history from "pagers on doctors' belts" to "a supercomputer in every pocket."
Pei said he expects AI devices to succeed first through specific productivity tools rather than one breakthrough gadget. Progress will come "in the tools people rely on to get real things done, and that's where the real opportunity is today," he wrote. He said an "iPhone of AI" would still arrive "in a few years," built on that work, adding it "might be a form factor nobody has imagined yet, or three of today's devices collapsing into one." Nothing has not released specifications, pricing or images of the December product.
