ESSEX COUNCIL BANS PRIDE FLAGS AT LIBRARY FOLLOWING REFORM ELECTION WIN

SUN 14 JUN 2026

Rochford's LGBTQ+ community has begun campaigning against a ban imposed by Essex County Council on flying Pride flags and holding Pride events at local libraries. The restriction was introduced following Reform's election victory in May. Members of the community, including Chris Taylor, stated that the ban sends a message that LGBTQ+ people are not welcome in the county.

The policy represents a shift in the council's approach following the change in political control. Prior to Reform's election success, members of the Rochford LGBTQ+ community had already expressed concern about increasing political rhetoric around identity issues. The new restrictions prevent the display of Pride flags and the organisation of Pride-related activities within Essex County Council library facilities.

The community has begun organising a response to the ban. Chris Taylor and other LGBTQ+ members have initiated efforts to challenge the council's decision. The campaign reflects broader concerns amongst LGBTQ+ groups regarding political attitudes towards identity representation in public spaces across the county.
