BOY LOSES LEG AFTER BARRY ISLAND STABBING, COURT HEARS
Newport Crown Court heard a boy's leg was amputated through the knee after he was stabbed at Barry Island on Bank Holiday Monday, 25 May. Idris Ahmed, of Riverside, Cardiff, denies grievous bodily harm with intent, unlawfully inflicting grievous bodily harm, and possessing a bladed article. Prosecutor Nuhu Gobir said Ahmed approached the boy from behind, pulled a knife from his shorts and stabbed him in the leg without warning, after the boy, who cannot be named because of his age, had acted as a peacemaker between his friends and Ahmed's group. He was taken to the University Hospital of Wales, where an artery in his leg was found to be completely blocked.
The two groups met near a rocky area of the beach after one of the boy's friends grew uneasy, believing Ahmed's group had an issue with them. The groups shook hands, but Ahmed returned minutes later and stabbed the boy without warning, the court was told. A witness heard Ahmed say "I need to dash this" before something metal was thrown against a wall, and police later found a knife nearby. Ahmed fled the scene and was arrested after handing himself in to Cardiff Bay police station.
Ahmed denies stabbing anyone, telling police he knew nothing about it and had never carried a knife in public. The boy said he fell to the ground after being stabbed, telling those nearby: "I am going, I feel myself going." He later told police: "I thought I was going to die to be honest." The trial continues at Newport Crown Court.
