STEFFAN POWELL NAMED CO-HOST OF NAGA MUNCHETTY'S BBC BREAKFAST SHOW
BBC Radio 5 Live has confirmed that Steffan Powell will become the new co-host of Naga Munchetty's Breakfast show, starting in January 2027. Richard Maddock, Head of BBC Radio 5 Live, announced the appointment, saying Powell "has been a hugely valued part of the 5 Live team for many years now and has a fantastic relationship with our listeners." Maddock added that Powell is "a brilliant broadcaster with sharp journalistic instincts, infectious enthusiasm and a genuine ability to connect with audiences across the whole of the UK." Munchetty responded on X, formerly Twitter, writing: "I'm SO excited about this! Congratulations @SteffanPowell xx."
Powell currently co-hosts 5 Live Breakfast on Fridays and Sundays and presents other programmes across the network. He said in a statement: "I'm delighted, thrilled, excited. I really could go on... BBC Radio 5 Live holds a special place in my heart." Powell added that the station was "one of the reasons I trained to be a journalist," calling it "a privilege" to take charge of the Breakfast show after years at the network. He said working alongside Munchetty, whom he described as "a genuine legend of British journalism," would be "a joy."
Powell said he and Munchetty would aim to "put listeners first, cut through the noise and try to make sense of what's going on in the world." He cited developments "at home, abroad and on people's social media feeds." He acknowledged the scale of the task ahead, saying "there are some impressively large shoes to fill, but I'm excited about the challenge." The changeover moves Powell from his current weekend presenting slot into a full-time role on the network's flagship Breakfast programme.
