SUN 14 JUN 2026 CRIME

A nine-year-old girl died after police officers in Chakwal, Punjab province, opened fire on her family's vehicle whilst pursuing robbery suspects. Hania Ahmed was travelling with her family from Perth when armed robbers confronted them on Wednesday night. Police officers exchanged fire with two suspects on motorbikes, who then fled the scene. Additional officers arriving at the scene mistook the family's departing car for the suspects' vehicle and fired multiple rounds at it. Hania Ahmed was taken to District Headquarters Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Her father and brother sustained injuries and underwent surgery at Benazir Bhutto Hospital in Rawalpindi. Her mother remained unharmed.

The family, of Pakistan origin, had travelled to Chakwal to visit relatives following a pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia. The incident occurred on the same day they returned from their journey. A police officer was taken into custody following the shooting. Photographs of the vehicle revealed more than a dozen bullet holes. According to police statements, the two primary robbery suspects were subsequently killed in what authorities described as a "police encounter".

Chakwal District Police announced the establishment of a Joint Investigation Team to conduct a transparent and impartial inquiry into the incident. The investigation will examine all aspects of the case, authorities stated. Police confirmed that strict legal action would be pursued if negligence or officer culpability is established. The investigation remains ongoing.
