DE MINAUR BEATS ZVEREV TO REACH VIENNA OPEN FINAL
Alex de Minaur has reached the Vienna Open final after beating Alexander Zverev 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4) in a semi-final lasting two hours and 30 minutes. Zverev, due to replace Jannik Sinner as world No. 1 on Monday, suffered his first defeat since securing that ranking. De Minaur will face Carlos Alcaraz in Sunday's final at the Wiener Stadthalle. "Super proud with how I handled the situation," De Minaur said. "I played on my terms."
De Minaur, the tournament's fifth seed and world No. 10, had never beaten Zverev in an individual tournament, with previous wins over the German limited to team events and the Laver Cup exhibition. De Minaur said his serve faltered after a strong opening set, before he regrouped to dominate the deciding tiebreak. In the other semi-final, Carlos Alcaraz, the second seed and a seven-time grand slam winner, beat Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) to reach his fifth final of the year. The win extended Alcaraz's unbeaten run at ATP 500-level tournaments to 25 matches, stretching back to a defeat by Holger Rune at the Barcelona Open in April 2025.
The win lifts De Minaur above Spain's Rafael Jodar in the race to qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin, with next week's Paris Masters the last qualifying event. He would rise from 10th to seventh in the world rankings if he beats Alcaraz in Sunday's final. It will be his fourth final of the year; his only title came at the Rotterdam Open in February. De Minaur said he had stayed "very calm" during the deciding tiebreak despite two double faults, adding: "I played a very aggressive deciding tiebreak."
