SAT 31 OCT 2026 CRIME

Gardaí said a man died after an assault at an International Protection Accommodation Services (IPAS) centre in Tralee, County Kerry, on Saturday morning. Officers responded to a report of an assault at a residential property in Ballymullen shortly after 5.20am. They found the man with serious injuries, and he died a short time later. Gardaí said a second man sustained injuries and went to University Hospital Kerry. They said they did not believe his injuries were life-threatening.

Gardaí arrested another man at the scene in connection with the investigation. They said they were holding him under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a Garda station in County Kerry. The Department of Justice, Home Affairs and Migration described what happened at the IPAS centre as a “critical incident”. A department spokesperson said: “An Garda Síochána has commenced a criminal investigation and, while this is underway, the department cannot comment further on the matter at this time.”

Gardaí have appointed a senior investigating officer and are establishing an incident room at Tralee Garda Station. They have notified the Office of the State Pathologist and asked the Garda Technical Bureau to attend. Officers are preserving the scene for forensic and technical examination. Investigators will arrange a post-mortem examination. Gardaí asked anyone with information to contact Tralee Garda Station on 066 7102300, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
