TECH EXPERT TOM HONEYANDS LOSES £70,000 IN PHONE SCAM

SUN 14 JUN 2026 CRIME

Tom Honeyands, host of The Tech Chap, lost £70,000 after falling victim to a fraudulent phone call. The scam occurred whilst Honeyands was on a work trip to Tokyo. Upon discovering the fraud, Honeyands experienced both anger and embarrassment at having been deceived. He subsequently began questioning whether he had disclosed excessive personal information through his social media videos.

The caller claimed to represent a legitimate organisation, exploiting techniques commonly used in telephone fraud schemes. Honeyands provided vital details during the call that enabled the fraudster to access his accounts. The incident highlights the vulnerability of individuals to social engineering tactics, regardless of their technical expertise or familiarity with digital security. Honeyands' public profile as a technology content creator made the breach particularly significant.

The case underscores the effectiveness of telephone-based fraud methods against targets across all knowledge levels. Scammers continue to exploit information shared openly on social media platforms to construct convincing pretexts for contact. Honeyands' experience demonstrates that awareness of fraud tactics does not guarantee immunity from sophisticated social engineering approaches.
