HENDERSON FACES BOOS ON CHELSEA RETURN TO ANFIELD

THU 29 OCT 2026 FOOTBALL

Sections of the Anfield crowd booed Jordan Henderson during his first match there as a Chelsea player on Wednesday night. Liverpool beat Chelsea 6-5 in a penalty shootout after their Carabao Cup fourth-round tie ended 1-1. Henderson, a former Liverpool captain, argued with former team-mate Virgil van Dijk during the match. He converted Chelsea’s fifth penalty and appeared to smirk towards the crowd afterwards. His actions drew criticism from some Liverpool supporters, while others questioned the reception he received.

Morgan Rogers and Cody Gakpo scored from the spot before half-time, accounting for both goals in normal time. Neither team scored again during the 90 minutes, sending the tie to a shootout. Some users on X criticised Henderson for taking the fifth kick, which they associated with a chance to score a winning penalty. Other supporters said Henderson did not deserve boos on his return. The exchange with Van Dijk also drew attention online.

The quarter-final draw sends Bournemouth to Anfield to face Liverpool. Recorded results give Liverpool five wins from five penalty shootouts against Chelsea. Liverpool have won the Carabao Cup 10 times. Wednesday’s result takes Liverpool into the last eight and ends Chelsea’s run in the fourth round.
