SECOND WICHITA STATE STUDENT FACES RAPE CHARGE

WED 28 OCT 2026 CRIME

James Vandenberg, a Wichita State University student, was arrested on Saturday at a campus dormitory and booked into Sedgwick County Jail on one count of rape. His bond was set at $100,000, and he was released after posting bail. Authorities have not released details of the allegation, including the circumstances of the reported assault. A booking photograph shows Vandenberg smiling. He is a freshman studying business at the Kansas university.

University police arrested another student, Aaron Christian, on 12 October in a separate case involving allegations of rape and aggravated domestic battery. The arrests took place less than two weeks apart. Wichita State’s police crime log lists a rape report concerning an incident late on 11 October at The Suites, a campus residential facility. Police received that report shortly after midnight the following day, according to the log. The log records an arrest and says investigators received the case.

After Christian’s arrest, Wichita State Director of Communication Lainie Mazzullo-Hart said the university took reports of sexual assault seriously. “Sexual violence has no place in any campus community,” she said. Mazzullo-Hart said the university would follow applicable laws and its reporting, investigative and student support procedures. University officials said students seeking help with relationship violence, sexual misconduct or stalking could contact its Counseling and Psychological Services.
