QATAR FACES SWITZERLAND IN GROUP STAGE OPENER

SAT 13 JUN 2026 FOOTBALL

Qatar and Switzerland contest their opening World Cup group match on Saturday, 13 June at 3 p.m. ET in Santa Clara, California. The fixture follows a 1-1 draw between Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Both teams require a victory to strengthen their group stage positions. Switzerland enters as the betting favourite, with odds of -500 compared to Qatar's +1300.

Switzerland's campaign is led by midfielder Granit Xhaka, who captains the side. Xhaka guided Sunderland to seventh place in the Premier League following the club's promotion to England's top flight in spring 2025. At 33 years old, this represents likely his final World Cup appearance. Switzerland reaches its sixth consecutive World Cup after reaching the Round of 16 in 2022, where Portugal defeated the team 6-1. Qatar makes its second World Cup appearance after automatically qualifying as the 2022 host nation. Julen Lopetegui manages Qatar following his previous role at West Ham. Qatar's attacking focus centres on Akram Afif, who has played in Qatar's domestic league since 2020.

The match represents the first full day of group stage action in the 2026 tournament. Saturday's schedule includes four matches across Groups B, C and D. Brazil faces Morocco at 6 p.m. ET in East Rutherford, New Jersey on the same day. Morocco reached the 2022 World Cup semi-finals and won the African Cup of Nations this year, with many key squad members returning from four years ago.
